- Post things you have the right to post.
- Punch at situations, not at people.
- Mark anything that needs a warning.
- Do not put anyone in danger, including yourself.
- Do not fake engagement, and do not run scams.
Everything below is the detail behind those five rules.
Memes exaggerate, mock and provoke. That is the point of the format, and we are not interested in sanding it down. Dark humour, self-deprecation, political satire and jokes about institutions are all welcome.
The line is targeting and harm.
| Allowed | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| A joke about a public figure's policy or public conduct | A campaign of posts about a private individual designed to humiliate them |
| Self-deprecating humour about your own group | Content that dehumanises a protected group |
| Absurd or violent slapstick in an obviously fictional context | A credible threat, or content that encourages violence against a real person |
| A screenshot of a public argument with names removed | A screenshot exposing someone's private contact details or address |
| Dark humour about a shared experience of grief or illness | Mocking an identifiable person for a disability, illness or bereavement |
Never allowed, no exceptions
- Any content that sexualises, exploits, endangers or grooms a person under 18. We remove it, terminate the account, preserve evidence and report it to the authorities.
- Credible threats of violence against any person or place.
- Content promoting or coordinating terrorism, mass violence or a violent extremist organisation.
- Content encouraging suicide, self-harm or disordered eating, including content that presents these as aspirational or as a joke aimed at someone struggling.
- Non-consensual intimate imagery, and threats to publish it.
- Sale of drugs, weapons, stolen goods, counterfeit documents, or human body parts.
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services first. Then report the content in the app and write to safety@hahaboo.com so we can act quickly.
- Do not attack people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, caste, religion, disability, disease, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation or immigration status.
- Do not organise or join pile-ons, brigades or coordinated abuse of a person or account.
- Do not use slurs, dehumanising comparisons or hateful imagery, including as a "joke".
- Do not repeatedly contact someone who has blocked you, or evade a block with another account.
- Do not post someone's home address, phone number, workplace, identity documents, financial details or private messages without their consent.
- Do not sexually harass anyone, including in direct messages, comments or story replies.
Blocking removes a person from your experience entirely and undoes any follow relationship in both directions. Reporting brings the content to our moderators. You can do both.
- Do not impersonate another person, brand or organisation in a way likely to deceive. Parody accounts are fine when they are clearly labelled as parody.
- Do not buy, sell, trade or artificially generate reactions, comments, follows, views or reposts.
- Do not run multiple accounts to manipulate rankings, evade enforcement, or fake a consensus.
- Do not post spam, mass unsolicited messages, or repetitive content designed to flood the feed.
- Do not run scams, phishing, pyramid schemes, fake giveaways or investment fraud.
- Do not post manipulated media presented as real where it is likely to deceive and cause harm. Obvious jokes, edits and shitposts are not this.
Meme culture runs on remixing, and that is fine. What is not fine is passing off someone else's work as your own, or reposting content whose owner has asked for it to be taken down.
- Credit original creators where you know who they are.
- Do not remove or crop out watermarks and signatures.
- Do not upload commercial music, film or television clips you do not have a licence for, including as reel audio.
- If a rights holder submits a valid complaint, we remove the content. Repeat infringement ends the account.
Our Copyright and Intellectual Property Policy explains how to file a complaint and how to respond to one.
Some content is lawful and allowed but should not appear unannounced in someone's feed.
- Mark it sensitive in the composer if it contains graphic injury, medical imagery, distressing scenes or strong adult themes.
- Marked content is blurred until a viewer chooses to reveal it.
- Sexual content, gratuitous gore and shock content are not permitted at all, marked or otherwise.
- We may add a sensitivity label ourselves, and we may remove content that is repeatedly posted without one.
- All of these guidelines apply to reels, stories and story replies exactly as they apply to posts.
- Stories disappear after 24 hours from the Service, but anyone who saw one may have kept a copy. Post accordingly.
- Do not use reels to launder content that would be removed as a post.
- Audio in a reel must be audio you have the right to use.
We weigh the severity of the breach, whether it looks deliberate, whether it is part of a pattern, and the harm it causes.
| Severity | Typical outcome |
|---|---|
| Minor or first-time | Content removed, with a notice explaining why. |
| Repeated | Reduced distribution, or a temporary restriction on posting, commenting or messaging. |
| Serious | Account suspended pending review. |
| Severe | Account terminated immediately and permanently. |
| Criminal | Account terminated, evidence preserved, and a report to the relevant authorities. |
Appeals
If you think we got it wrong, reply to the notice or write to support@hahaboo.com within 30 days. A different reviewer looks at the appeal. If we made a mistake, we restore the content and remove the strike from your record.
